Thinking about what to do for math for my son next year, and would like to hear what you each recommend and why. For those of you that have been following our homeschooling journey, you know that my son for Pre K age 4 last year completed math level K as well as Math level 1 and Practice makes perfect level 1. This year for Kindergarten age 5, he is about to complete math level 2. He is mathematically advanced and gets bored when working on things that are too easy for him. So…here is where it gets tricky. Even though he can already skip count by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s 5’s, and 10’s, which will definitely be helpful for the multiplication in level 3, I personally feel it would be best to spend an extra semester cementing his addition and subtraction facts and practicing a bit more with some money concepts like making change. He can solve the problems in math 2 well and quick, either by mental math or when he needs to quickly using his fingers, so that is not an issue, but I still feel like he could benefit from another review of the second semester of math 2 before moving forward. I did peek ahead to math level 3 and can see him working on the first portion of math level 3, to about lesson 13. I feel he would do fine his second semester with the larger 3 digit addition and subtraction problems , but I would have him stop around the middle of the level 3 book where the more advanced multiplication and division problems are introduced. Basically Id be saving the multiplication and division for him as a second grader instead of next year as a first grader. Oh how I wish there was a math level 2.5 as that I feel would be where he is at. What do you all recommend? These are the 3 different options Ive been considering for his first grade math. Plan A) 1st semester redo the second half of math 2 and 2nd semester do the first half of math 3. Plan B) 1st semester do practice makes perfect 2 and 2nd semester work on the first half of math 3 along with the first half of pmp 3 to help complete his school year and have him work on all new material he has not done before. Plan C) Have him redo the whole math level 2 book, but with another math on the side so he doesn’t get bored because the whole book by itself would be material he has already done before. Opinions? Suggestions? I know this is why many suggest sticking to the level recommended for the childs grade level even if the material is at times easy for them , but in our situation and for my little ones needs, that simply doesn’t work and was unrealistic , so the option of having kept him in the lower math levels simply based on his age was not an option. I speak from experience after trying to do that with him before and it being a negative experience. Those of you that follow us know I am continuously finding ways to adapt the curriculum to where he is at. In case you’re wondering, Im leaning towards either plan A or Plan B, but just wanted to hear other suggestions before I decide for sure, and the time to purchase books for next year arrives. Thanks in advance.
